• About Dr. Philip Schoenfeld MD, Gastroenterlogy

    A gastroenterologist in Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Philip Schoenfeld MD of Gastroenterology, has served as chief (emeritus) of the gastroenterology section of the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center since 2019. In this capacity, he conducts research related to colorectal cancer screenings, colonoscopy, and pharmacologic treatment of irritable bowel syndrome and other gastrointestinal motility disorders. Alongside his research responsibilities, Dr. Philip Schoenfeld provides patient care and endoscopic services on a part-time basis.

    Dr. Schoenfeld holds a bachelor of science in biology and a master of science in health profession education from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, and a gastroenterology fellowship at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

    His publications include an evidence-based position statement on the management of irritable bowel syndrome in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. Dr. Philip Schoenfeld also contributed to The American College of Gastroenterology Guideline for Colorectal Cancer Screening. He currently serves on the GiQuic Colonoscopy Quality Indicators Committee and the American Gastroenterological Association Quality Leadership Council.
